We recently spent a day playing, creating, and learning with rocks.
Come along as we discover all the ways we can explore rocks in preschool.
We can gather rocks.
We can look under rocks.
We can take a closer look at big rocks.
We can wash and polish rocks.
We can weigh rocks.
We can color with rocks.
We can add animals to our rocks.
We can compare the sizes of our rocks.
We can make patterns out of rocks.
We can stand on rocks.
We can have fun with rocks.

I love the book If You Find a Rock by Peggy Christian. Thanks for all your great ideas!
I will look it up Chris! Thanks!
Just wanted to add to these excellent pictures that I am studying North Pole and found beatiful opportunity to do sculptures with rocks as the Inuit use to, I found some information on Pinterest and then just created a way to play. You can try making human figure or stamp with rectangular sponges and paint as art. Laura Oreamuno, Costa Rica
I love these ideas Laura! We did do a few more activities with rocks which are coming up over the next two days! Gotta love all the amazing ideas you can find on Pinterest!
Love this post! I just ordered a Rocks and Minerals Science Kit from Montessori Services. My 3.5 year old is really into this activity right now!
I would love to hear more about how you use the kit with your little one Marnie! We just collected rocks from my yard and added a few from the Dollar Tree:)
I love this idea of doing a day of rocks! Our preschool is on the letter “P” so we are right behind you! We will definitely be having a “Little Pea” theme tomorrow and I am so excited about this rock post because we have plenty of rocks around here 🙂 Do you do a whole new theme for your letter each day of preschool? For example rainbows one day, rocks another day of learning about letter “R”? Thanks for all of your wonderful ideas and inspiration! This is my favorite preschool website for sure.
Hi Amanda,
It all depends on how much time we have and what else we are exploring. Sometimes we will do a whole theme like rocks on one day and rainbows on another day and other times, we will just do rocks and rainbows all on the same day. But we pretty much change what we are exploring every single day unless the kids really show an interest in something – then we keep it around a bit longer.
