A fun way for your students to develop hand-eye coordination!
Two very basic skills for preschoolers to practice are rolling and catching a ball. This may seem simple enough and most children have the rolling part down but the catching part is always a little trickier. I have a game that I like to play with the children that I call “Roll the Ball Relay”…
How the Game Works
To play the game, the children line up on one side of the drive and I go to the other end. I roll each child the ball and they have to catch it and run (or walk) with it all the way back over to me. I adjust the speed of the ball to match each child’s size and abilities…
Taking Turns
Then we start again. Each child takes a turn catching and running. After they have mastered this part of the game, then I send the ball over to them with a little bounce in the toss…
Having fun!
Each child takes a turn catching and running and lining up behind me to start again. This is all great fun for them and eventually we can add more complex play to this game. A great way to introduce the concept of running relay races and a great way to work on those ball handling skills!
Building Gross Motor Skills
Of course, this is only one way we work on ball handling skills. A little free play at the basket ball goal is also a great way to build those large motor skills…
