I will had the privilege of joining three of my fellow bloggers on Google+Â for a live video chat on the topic of fine motor skills. Before sharing our G+ Video (Shown at the bottom), I thought I would do a little reflection on the topic of fine motor skills…
Â
The promotion of fine motor skills make up a large part of our classroom planning of activities as well as our classroom environment and set-up…
Mrs. Courtney and I are always considering the question, “What will the children physically do?” when we are deciding on activities to implement and materials to supply…
You may have heard a parent or teacher say, “It’s better to keep little hands busy.” This is very true when it comes to a class full of young children but we understand that it in order to strengthen fine motor skills and control that little hands need to be busy doing something that invites concentration, builds strength, promotes coordination, and instills confidence…
We understand that a young child’s fine muscles in his or her hands take time to strengthen and the ability to control those muscles takes opportunity…
We understand that young children need opportunities to experience fine motor activities that are challenging but realistically doable for their age so they will develop a sense of confidence in their abilities and not be too quick to give up…
We also understand that young children need to be invited to explore with their hands through fun, creative, and open ended processes and materials…
Finally, we understand that the pathway towards successful writing skills is through fun, hands-on, opportunities that keep little hands busy exploring and manipulating the things in their world…
