I made a few marble mazes for my preschoolers to explore during our unit on marbles. Sometimes, I get in this DIY mode and like to make little games or activities just to add a little extra something fun in the classroom…
My students found the mazes set out on the table with a container of marbles when they got to school that day. We also had the Magnetic Marble Tubes I shared about earlier and our Marble Painting that same day…
To make the marble maze, I cut up a few colorful straws into pieces and hot glued them into the bottoms and the lids of small gift boxes…
The tricky part of this was spacing the straws so the marbles could roll easily between each straw. I wanted each maze to look a little different so I fiddled with them for a bit and then glued them in place…
This is the kind of DIY toy that I set out for the children to explore the first time, and then I leave in a basket in one of my centers for the children to choose from on future days…
It was also a good way to use up some of my left-over boxes. The children played with the marbles and mazes off and on through out the morning…
It was hard to get good photos of the play in action since marble mazes invite constant, quick, movement of their hands…
It takes a little concentration and some good eye-hand coordination to move those marbles through the mazes without letting the marbles fall out of the box…
I thought about putting a plastic cover over the top of each maze but then I realized that some of the children will want to add more than one marble to the maze. Part of the challenge is trying to keep all the marbles in the box so I decided to leave the marble maze boxes a little bit more open ended for play and exploration…
I think I will introduce a few more “maze type activities” to my children in the up and coming weeks. I had three different ideas that were shared with me this past week that my class would just love. The first one is a tape maze from Jamie over at Hands on: as we grow…
To see the other two mazes I would like to try in my classroom, you will need to be able to log into Facebook. These two videos are a-maze-ing! You can view them on Facebook by clicking here and here! (At least I hope you can)!

I want to make a bigger one!! Headed over to check out yours too!
That is brilliant Deborah! I think Henry would love this version of a maze! Will have to try one. Thanks for sharing our tape maze!
You are welcome Jamie:)
what fun! we’re getting ready to make a marble run for the fridge! are those the same type of boxes you used for your “i spy” boxes? i’d love to get my hands on some of those!
pinned this 🙂
Yes, these are the same boxes. I bought a ton of them from the Dollar store at Christmas time and am still using them up!!
Brilliant!! I love these! I want to make them, but I’m wondering if the effort would be worth it for one child to play with. Hmmm… maybe it would be fun to have Matthew help me make a few. Thanks for a wonderful idea! We are going to do your magnetic marble track soon too. 🙂
Hi Nicole – so nice to hear from you!
Yes, I would make it with your child rather than for your child! It will be a much more rewarding experience for both of you…
This is sooooooooo clever!! LOVE it! I would love for you to share it at my TGIF linky party (https://livinglifeintentionally.blogspot.com/2012/02/tgif-linky-party-15.html) I know my readers would LOVE this too!!
Beth =-)
This is a super idea!! My boys would love it and I’ve shared it with my little guy’s play school teacher 🙂

Absolutely wonderful!
Deborah, I’m just coming back to tell you I made one of these mazes yesterday for my son (5 years) and he LOVES it. 🙂 Even my husband thought it was cool. We used a steel marble (from his Magz set) and a magnet underneath to move it through the maze. He is all about magnets lately, so he loved this. (We also made your fridge magnetic marble run, which was also a big hit!) I’ll show him today how to work the maze with a regular marble like your preschoolers did – moving the box top around – and… Read more »
Nicole – you amaze me! After making my marble mazes, I also thought of other ways I could do this where the children could be more involved in the process and next time, I will definitely try to expand the idea so the children can change things around and even try making their own. I love the idea of using other materials like the wiki stix so they children can make their lines higher!
Thank you… this is a really nice idea…for marble fans like us!
