What? Sorting the mail on the magnet board?
I know, a magnet board is supposed to be for magnets but when you have a small space like we do, you make the most of it and this worked perfectly for our little sorting game.
In the Honey Bee Hive, we have been focusing our discussions on all the thinking that goes into creating engaging centers around the classroom. It takes much more than one might think, especially when it comes to having a small classroom. I take that back, creating engaging and meaningful centers takes more than one might think no matter what size classroom you might have. To add a little extra meaning and fun to our mailbox corner, the magnet center was turned into a simple sorting game.
The clear containers on the board are sticky back clear pockets. I have had these pockets sitting around forever and finally Miss Kaylin put them to good us. Miss Kaylin drew an address and stamp design on rectangular shapes cut out of different colors of foam then set the shapes out for the children to stop by and sort. As the children sorted the mail into the different pouches, we had some fabulous color recognition and critical thinking going on.
This simple center gave us the opportunity to talk about how real mail comes into the post office all mixed up and then needs to be sorted and organized so that it can be delivered to the right address. If you put real mail in the wrong mailbox, folks won’t get their mail. No one wants their mail to get lost or sent to the wrong place. The children in this class were excellent mail clerks – sorting the mail into the appropriate mailbox was a snap for them.
After sorting all that mail into the different pouches, it was definitely time to take a step back and admire the work. This mail is going to exactly the right place which is quite a feeling of accomplishment.
