There are so many different ways to explore a color but when you have a fruit that has the color and the color word all built into one, like an orange, it’s only natural to explore oranges all around the classroom…
The children explored “orange juice” water play which was made up of water, clear water beads, orange liquid water color, and a few orange slices…
We also added empty orange juice containers and juice cups for pouring. This center was the biggest hit of all the centers. I think partially because we added the water beads and partially because my students always love anything to do with waterplay…
On our other table, the children explored the weight, color, and shape of oranges by rolling a few oranges back and forth in paint with a partner. This process was a terrific way to invite lots of teamwork from adding paint to the box to lifting both ends of the box up and down to get the oranges rolling…
As the morning progressed, the children became more self-sufficient in organizing their partners, adding paint, and keeping the orange box painting going…
The children also explored the color orange with orange play dough and orange peels that we had scraped out, cleaned up, and saved up for the day…
Lots of different ideas were tried out at the orange play dough station…
And all through out the week, we had our small sand table filled with orange sand for writing, drawing and print-making…
By the time we finished up our week on the color orange, I was now over the color orange and I think the kids were too!
