The art wall

I have a lot of windows all around my classroom which I love but it also means I have very, very little wall space for hanging up kid’s art. As one solution to display kid’s art in my classroom, I asked my husband if he would build me an art frame…

To build the frame, my husband cut and hammered together a long strip of white wood trim we purchased from Home Depot into a big square and I painted it red. I know, that is a bright color but my walls are intentionally a very soft color so that I can add things like a bright red frame on them without it being overwhelming to the eyes…

After the paint dried, I added four lengths of string across the back of the frame for clipping clothespins on…

And then my husband hung the frame using industrial strength velcro to the wall. Let me warn you that Industrial Strength velcro is strong and will pull your drywall right out of the wall if you mess up and decide to pull it off so be sure you know what you want to do before you ever think about using it…

The size and shape of the frame was designed to fit into one of the only large open wall spaces I had available in the classroom…

The frame is up high but because we used velcro to attach the frame to the wall, I can pry the frame loose from the wall to add artwork and eventually to invite my students to begin adding their own artwork and then put it back up. Remember, the industrial strength velcro that we used is very strong but should I feel the frame might be getting unstable at any level, I will just hammer the frame permanently in place.  Although the frame is up higher than I would like, it still really helps and as needed, the teachers can use a step stool to reach the clothespins…

I love the simple way the art frame can be used to display art throughout the school year. It may not be a perfect solution but the kids seem happy and I am happy with it too!

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
