The children began by once again, choosing a crayon from a set of crayons I had laying out on the table. I had already poured a little bit of liquid water color into bowls of shave cream to match the colors of crayons in preparation for our sensory experience…

Once each child chose a color of crayon, I handed them a bowl of shave cream with color added to mix together with a plastic spoon. I think it would be fun (some day in my future) to put the color underneath the shave cream and have the children stir the shave cream with the crayon so it would look like the color of the crayon was what changed the color of shave cream. Just to add a little mystery to the process…

But my students loved mixing in the color and once the color was mixed in good with the shave cream, we dumped all the bowls of shave cream into the center of our table (I have our magnet board on the table for this process)…

Next I invited the children to pick up their crayons and dip them into their color of shave cream and begin to color with the crayon and shave cream all around the table…

As the children swirled their crayons around the table, the shave cream colors began to swirl around together. We stopped a few times to talk about what was happening to our colors as they began to swirl together…

Some of the children even noticed how the ends of their crayons were getting a swirl of colors as they went around and through all the colors of shave cream…

As the children mixed the colors with their crayons, the colors began to all run together until we had only one color and the crayon swirling changed to using hands for play…

The sensory play took on a life of its own from that point and I just stood back to observe and lend a hand if needed…

My students loved every minute of the process and as they were ready, they rinsed off their hands in our water bucket, and moved on to something else.  Since I used my magnetic board to hold the shave cream, I just picked it up and washed it down real quick with a water hose at the end of our day…
