While I was over in the classroom working on sorting toys and preparing for our first day in preschool, my two little grandsons stopped by and one of them left behind this little note for me. I thought I would take a few minutes to translate the note and share it with you too…
Tip One
Before you tell me that I need to put the lids back on the markers or put the markers back into the lids so they don’t get all dried up and ruined…
Be sure to first tell me how you noticed all the colorful lines and circles that I just took the time to draw…
Tip Two
Before you tell me that playing in the sink is a big no-no and a waste of our soap and water and all those paper towels…
Be sure to first tell me how you noticed that I expertly washed every single animal we had in the classroom and set them neatly on the paper towels to dry…
Tip Three
Before you tell me that pulling on the rubber band too hard is sure to snap my finger….
Be sure to first tell me that you noticed how strong I am to be able to stretch those rubber bands so far and actually still manage to get a few on the board…
Tip Four
Before you tell me that you just sorted all those buttons by color into nice and neat little piles and put them in the box for later…
Be sure to first tell me that you noticed how I was able to use my hands and fingers to reach in and pick up every single button and drop them all neatly into one single jar…
Tip Five
Before you tell me that I shouldn’t dump all the dinosaurs out of the basket and then just leave them on the floor…
Be sure to first tell me that you noticed how thoughtful I was to leave one dinosaur in the basket for my little brother to play with…
End of translation!
I hope my new students are just as excited to come to my classroom as my grandsons were today. I hope they want to explore, examine, and discover the things that I am in the process of preparing for them. But mostly, I hope that I will remember to tell my students all the good and positive things that I notice about what they are doing as we work together to learn about our classroom and build our community.
