Yesterday, I shared with you how the book Ain’t Gonna Paint No More by Karen Beaumont inspired us to paint designs on our arms. Today, I’d like to share with you how that same book inspired our class to paint a beautiful mural…
Ain’t Gonna Paint No More is an awesome book about a little boy’s love of painting. He paints on the ceilings, the walls, and even on his body! The pictures in this book are just magnificent…
The illustrator uses bright, vivid colors that inspired our class to explore the painting process by painting a mural on our own classroom wall…
Though our children paint on a regular basis in preschool, it is rare that they ever get to explore the process by painting something as grandiose as a mural. Butcher paper covered a large section of the wall. On the table, the children found many different types of brushes, rollers, scrapers, and sponges. There were also tubes of paint so that they could choose their own colors. After reading our story, the children quickly set about creating their collective masterpiece…
Each child seemed to bring their own approach into creating the mural. Some children tried all of the different tools…
While others were interested in mixing the paint…
Other children were not at all concerned about color mixing or tools, but rather focused their attention on covering as much of the mural as they could…
It isn’t often that we get to paint with such large motor movements in the middle of winter. We usually save that type of painting for our outdoor classroom, where drips and spills can be sprayed away with a garden hose. Was this a messy experience? Yes, it required quite a lot of clean up. But other than perhaps adding a tarp to the floor, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. Children aren’t often given the opportunity to paint like this at home. So, when it was offered at preschool, they took full advantage…
The children stood on chairs and stools to reach the high places that their small arms couldn’t quite reach on their own. And when that wasn’t quite enough, we tried a different approach…
When the children’s masterpiece was finished, we couldn’t take our eyes off of it. It was absolutely stunning! It brought such beauty into our classroom that continues to keep us inspired…
