My class has been exploring the wonderful signs of spring and one sign that is starting to pop up all around us are beautiful flowers….
One simple activity I shared with the children was how to make a tissue paper flower…
The children found pipe cleaners and squares of tissue paper set out on the table so they could create their own flowers…
Although this is a simple activity to prepare, it is actually quite challenging for the children as they work to poke a hole through their tissue paper squares with the pipe cleaners…
My PreK students had no problem at all poking the holes but my threes (now mostly four) found this process more difficult. I thought some of the younger children were just going to give up when all of the sudden they figured it out! Once they got their grip just right and poked those holes, they were on a roll…
Some of the children worked for a long time adding tissue paper to the pipe cleaners. This process was a great exercise in fine motor strength and control…
Some of the children added lots and lots of tissue paper – almost covering the entire stem…
Others added a few tissue paper squares and decided they were finished…
After the children were satisfied with the number of tissue paper squares on their stems, they would proudly hold up their flowers and announce, “Look at my flower!” And they were all quite beautiful indeed!
