Exploring feet with Dr. Seuss

After reading the “The Foot Book” by Dr. Seuss, I thought the kids might enjoy painting with their feet…

There are so many ways we could have approached foot painting but since these children are our oldest children, I thought the best way would be to let them explore the process as much on their own as they could…

To contain the paint somewhat, I set out large boxes with paper and some paint. The children sat in a chair next to their box and were invited to paint their own feet…

Miss Abby and I rolled up pant legs, sleeves, and gave each child a paint smock. Yes, we were trying to keep the foot painting in the box and off the clothes but this can get a little tricky. In the past, I have had children walk across a long sheet of paper but it can get a little slippery. Because I wanted the children to run the process independently, I decided to “contain” the process a bit – so we used the big boxes…

I set out paint and paint brushes and had the children go for it. The children added paint to their own feet but occasionally, I helped add a little more paint too…

The children then would walk around the box and then sit down to add more paint as desired…

Some of the children needed reminded that in order to actually make footprints on the paper, they needed to paint the bottom of their feet instead of the top…

We had lots of giggles along the way. Did you know it tickles more when the teacher paints your feet then when you paint your own?

The children enjoyed this fun process of painting and leaving foot prints. We ended up with four very beautiful footprint painted murals that I have saved…

After completing our footprint painting, each child dipped their feet into his or her own small tub of water and used sponges to wash their feet, legs, arms, and hands…

Miss Abby and I helped a bit with the cleanup process too. The children enjoyed washing their feet just as much as painting with them…

A little messy but super fun!

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
