Quick tip for storing your preschool flannel board stories

A simple strategy that will help keep you organized!

I am always making and collecting flannel board stories and games for my classroom. I love how flannel board stories and activities can capture the attention of young children and get them involved in circletime. I will be posting several of our flannel board activities throughout this school year but today, I want to show a few tips for storing flannel board pieces…

Organizing Flannel Board Stories

One of my favorite ways to store flannel board pieces is through what I call a “3-Ring Binder System”…

On the cover of the binders, I slip in a title page to help me easily know the kind of flannel board pieces I store in each binder…

There are two ways I store the flannel boards inside the binders. One way is by using gallon sized ziplock baggies. I simply punch three holes through the baggies and thread them onto the rings of the binder. I like the ziplock so that I can keep small pieces from falling out…

The second way I store flannel board pieces inside the binder is by putting them in plastic sheet protectors (available at most office supply stores). The flannel board pieces will slide out of the protectors so you can put a piece of sticky back velcro at the top to close the top. You can also put small flannel board pieces in a lunch-sized baggie and drop the baggie in the plastic sleeve…

Sorting by Title

I try to put my flannel board pieces in the binders in order of title but sometimes I organize them by shapes, colors, numbers, holidays, themes, and so on. You really have to decide what makes sense to you as to how you want to organize the flannel boards once you put them in the binders…

Including a Book, Song, or Poem

You may have noticed that with some of the flannel board pieces, I also slip in a favorite book that goes with the flannel board. I keep some paper back children’s books in the binder as well to read along as I share a similar flannel board story or song…

I also keep a copy of any poems or songs that might go with the flannel board. I don’t always need them buy it is nice to have the words right there in case I am drawing a blank…

This particular set of flannel boards are ones I purchased from Glitterful Felt Stories. I usually make my own set but when I find a good deal on a set already made for me, I jump on it…

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
